"True surgical excellence remains grounded in judgment, discipline, technical mastery, and an unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for women."
AAGL is proud to recognize Charles H. Koh, MD, as the 2026 Honorary Chair. Dr. Koh has had a profound influence over the evolution of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. A pioneer, innovator, and master surgeon, Dr. Koh helped redefine the possibilities of laparoscopic surgery long before MIGS became mainstream.
Born in Singapore and trained as both a physician and accomplished musician, Dr. Koh brought a rare combination of artistry, discipline, and technical precision to surgery. His groundbreaking achievements include performing and presenting the world's first laparoscopic microsurgical tubal reanastomosis in 1992, achieving outcomes that surpassed traditional open microsurgery. He subsequently pioneered "Suturing in the Vertical Zone," revolutionizing laparoscopic suturing ergonomics and enabling advanced reconstructive procedures. His innovative Koh needle holder became one of the most widely adopted and replicated laparoscopic instruments worldwide. He later introduced the KOH Cup and pneumo-occluder system, transformative innovations that helped simplify, standardize, and advance total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Through his pioneering work in radical excision of endometriosis, fertility-preserving surgery, bowel resection, and multidisciplinary pelvic surgery, Dr. Koh helped establish the foundation of complex MIGS and shape the specialty as it is practiced today.
Throughout his career, Dr. Koh's contributions to advanced endometriosis surgery, fertility-preserving procedures, bowel resection, and multidisciplinary pelvic surgery have helped establish the foundation of modern MIGS. Equally significant has been his impact as an educator and mentor, shaping generations of surgeons through his teaching, courses, publications, and surgical philosophy.
As the specialty embraces new frontiers in robotics, artificial intelligence, and data-driven care, Dr. Koh's career serves as a reminder that true surgical excellence remains grounded in judgment, discipline, technical mastery, and an unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for women. His lifetime of innovation and leadership continues to inspire the future of MIGS, making him exceptionally deserving of this distinguished appointment.
