Speaker Bio
My research career began during my PhD, where I developed a strong foundation in qualitative research methodologies while studying digital postgraduate medical education. This work provided the methodological basis for investigating complex clinical and educational challenges from a patient- and professional-centered perspective. Since then, my research has broadened substantially, with contributions to benign gynecology including the introduction and further development of the concept of Cesarean Scar Disorder and efforts to professionalize and standardize gynecological ultrasound imaging. My current research focuses on four interconnected areas:eHealth and menstrual healthI develop and evaluate digital health solutions for the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of menstrual and gynecological symptoms. A particular focus is adolescent menstrual health, where smartphone-based applications can facilitate early recognition of abnormal symptoms, improve self-management, and increase access to appropriate care.Artificial intelligence and advanced imagingMy research explores the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning to gynecology, particularly in combination with ultrasound imaging and longitudinal patient-generated data. This includes the development and evaluation of AI-supported diagnostic tools and advanced imaging techniques such as 3D ultrasound, Doppler imaging, and microvascular flow imaging. The overarching aim is to improve diagnostic accuracy, standardization, and accessibility of expert-level gynecological imaging.Chronic pelvic and neuropathic painWithin neuropelveology, I study the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of pelvic neuropathic pain syndromes. My research includes the relationship between endometriosis and neuropathic pain, pelvic vascular disorders, and novel neuromodulation strategies, including parasympathetic and peripheral nerve stimulation. The goal is to improve phenotyping of chronic pelvic pain and develop more individualized treatment strategies.Surgical innovationI evaluate innovative surgical techniques for complex benign gynecological conditions, including cesarean scar defect repair and pelvic neurolysis. This includes assessment of clinical outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and the role of robotic surgery. Where applicable, surgical innovations are evaluated according to the IDEAL framework to support structured and evidence-based implementation.Across these research themes, my work is driven by the integration of technology, imaging, data science, and clinical expertise to improve diagnosis and treatment for women with benign gynecological disorders.Clinical SpecialisationMy clinical practice focuses on complex benign gynecology, particularly endometriosis, adenomyosis, neuropelveology, advanced gynecological imaging, and complex minimally invasive surgery. As Deputy Head of the Endometriosis Center, I am involved in the multidisciplinary management of patients with complex endometriosis and adenomyosis, including advanced imaging and surgical treatment. I also coordinate logistics, planning, and evaluation of care within the regional network Endometriose Groot Amsterdam, supporting consistent standards of endometriosis care across participating centers. As Head of the Amsterdam Neuropelveology Center, I lead specialized diagnostic pathways for women with chronic pelvic pain in whom neuropathic or nerve-related mechanisms are suspected. The center combines detailed clinical assessment, advanced imaging, and targeted diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.I additionally serve as a tertiary referral specialist for complex benign gynecological surgery. My particular areas of expertise include cesarean scar defects (niches), complex uterine disorders such as fibroids, and rare or technically challenging ectopic pregnancies, including cesarean scar and interstitial pregnancies. My clinical and academic work are closely integrated: clinical challenges generate research questions, while emerging evidence and technological innovations are translated back into specialized patient care.
