26285: From Resident to CBG Surgeon: What You Need to Know

Saturday, November 14, 2026
2:15 pm - 4:15 pm

Room: RM309

Chairs: Liron Bar-El, Gabrielle T. Whitmore

Faculty: Christine E. Foley, Liron Bar-El, Gabrielle T. Whitmore

Description: Choosing a career in Complex Benign Gynecology (CBG) and navigating the fellowship application process can be challenging, particularly for trainees without access to CBG-trained mentors at their institution. Limited exposure to the day-to-day practice of a CBG surgeon, along with variability across CBG fellowship programs and CBG practices, often creates uncertainty regarding training pathways and career opportunities.
This interactive town hall is designed to provide medical students and residents with a clear, practical understanding of the field, the advantages of AAGL fellowship training, and potential career trajectories in CBG. The session will review key differences between CBG, general practice, and other gynecologic subspecialties, and will outline the breadth of clinical and surgical skills developed during fellowship. Participants will also gain insight into life after training, including both academic and private practice models.
A dedicated portion of the session will focus on the application process, including how to evaluate programs, strengthen applications, and how to maximize opportunities at national meetings such as AAGL.
The second half of the session will transition into a small-group, workshop-style format, allowing participants to engage directly with faculty for individualized guidance, including CV review, application strategy, and career planning.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Compare CBG sub specialization and other career pathways
  2. Describe the clinical, surgical, and academic skills, including surgical education and research, uniquely acquired during CBG fellowship.
  3. Differentiate fellowship programs based on structure, surgical exposure, research opportunities, and career alignment.
