Description:

This course will focus on one of the greatest challenges in complex pelvic surgery with an emphasis on strategies to avoid complications, recognizing complications when they occur, and repair techniques and including appropriate intra-operative consultation. This course will focus on four types of the most challenging complications that pelvic surgeons face including: Ureteral & Urologic injuries, Bowel injuries, Vascular complications, and prevention and management of thermal injuries.

This course will focus not just on the understanding of how to prevent and why a complication may occur, but also strategies to improve recognition, appropriate intra-operative consultation, repair, as well as follow-up management.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1) Identify appropriate diagnostic tests to identify ureteral and urologic injuries and develop strategies for appropriate consultation and repair; 2) Identify bowel injuries and apply techniques for appropriate repair; and 3) Identify risk factors for vascular and thermal injuries and deploy strategies to mitigate these risk utilizing surgical dissection techniques.
