Description: This course brings diverse perspectives from a panel of expert clinicians to achieve the goal of reducing the burden of chronic pelvic pain. We will focus on three areas of contemporary emphasis in covering state of the art management strategies: a) the underlying neurobiology of central sensitization shared across  chronic overlapping pain conditions as a core mechanistic concept in treating CPP conditions that do not respond durably to conventional use of NSAIDs, hormonal suppression, or gynecological surgery; b) identification of regional/peripheral nerve dysregulation and when to consider targeted therapy; and c) novel opportunities emerging to reverse or potentially prevent the onset of CPP. Drawing on existing published literature and clinical perspectives, the panel will cover a blend of both procedural and non-procedural approaches to provide a comprehensive care philosophy.

Learning Objectives: After attending this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Align evidence-based approaches to the history and physical exam in CPP alongside a globally endorsed classification framework (RU MOVVING SOME) for characterizing candidate mechanisms and modulators of chronic pain emergence and persistence; 2) Identify features suggestive peripheral nerve involvement in CPP and how to provide targeted treatment of such disorders in both the clinic and operating room; and 3) Recognize candidate high-profile targets for prevention of CPP following pelvic surgery or persistent episodic pelvic pain.
