Speaker Bio
Dr. Munro is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, a cofounder and Past Chair of FIGO’s Committee on Menstrual Disorders and Related Health Impacts (MDRHI), and the founder of the Women’s Health Research Collaborative (WHrC). The WHrC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research designed to raise awareness of normalized women’s reproductive health conditions. He received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, and is certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2024, he was received into the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as a member “ad eundem”. One aspect of his work, via the MDRHI and WHrC, has been diagnosing, characterizing, and treating the various causes of nongestational abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and the related disorders of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. From this work have come the two FIGO Systems for AUB in the reproductive years, including the PALM-COEIN system, as well as sub-classification systems for adenomyosis, leiomyomas, and ovulatory disorders, which are currently in widespread use worldwide. Another research focus has been the development and validation of the new EMIG training and testing platform, which is now used for certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. More recently, via the WHrC and other sources, there has been a focus on surgical trauma to the endometrium and the intrauterine adhesions that frequently result. An extensive systematic review and selected meta-analyses of the available research were published in September 2025 in Human Reproduction Update. Dr Munro has also been instrumental in the development of the R U MOVVING SOMe classification of causes of chronic pelvic pain, an international consensus process developed under the aegis of FIGO and the International Pelvic Pain Society and published in the IJGO in September 2025. He has published three textbooks, over 45 chapters, and more than 150 publications that have been cited over 14,000 times in the peer-reviewed literature. His relatively recent two-volume textbook, "Reconstructive and Reproductive Surgery in Gynecology", was published with Pr. Victor Gomel and was specifically designed with the MIGS Fellowship in mind.
