This course will review important aspects of evaluating the adnexal mass, a common problem for general gynecology and gynecologic surgeons. Management of adnexal masses requires an individualized approach that takes into account factors such as age (pre-puberty, reproductive age, and postmenopausal), symptoms, desire for fertility, and diagnosis during pregnancy. We will review important steps in workup such as imaging (including classification systems), tumor markers, and physical exam, and how that workup guides appropriate management.

Learning Objectives: After attending this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Identify the various types of common adnexal masses and how they present with regards to age, reproductive status, and pregnancy status; 2) Complete the important steps in working up an adnexal mass, including directed history and physical, imaging, and tumor markers; 3) Recognize concerning features of an adnexal mass that indicate the need for referral to a gynecologic oncologist and/or use of laparotomy for surgical treatment; and 4) Describe how adnexal masses are managed in special populations, such as patients actively trying for pregnancy and those currently pregnant.
