Special Lecture
Optimizing Sexuality Outcomes After Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery
Debra S. Wickman, MD, Banner Health, Phoenix, AZ
Lecture Description
The refinement of technique and technology in minimally invasive surgery has proven advantageous regarding preservation and improvement of female sexual function. However, considerations remain that are crucial to understanding and promoting sexual health in our patients.
This presentation will explore concepts central to female sexual well-being in the context of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery planning and recovery: limbic neurochemistry, vagal influences, sex steroid hormones, inflammation reduction, vasomodulation, and vulvoplasticity, to promote physiologic wellness, patient education, and intentional mind-body connection.
Timing is important in this endeavor, and the conversation should begin well before surgery. The benefit of involving a sexual medicine professional on the MIGS Team will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1) Explore sexuality status and expectations with patients pre-operatively to guide post-operative outcomes; 2) Describe the “four pillars” of vulvovaginal health, how each can be supported and, if ignored, can derail a surgical plan; 3) Recognize anatomic considerations for the female prostate relating to surgical outcomes; and 4) Encourage mind-body connection in patients to induce healing, restore function and promote compliance in ongoing self-care.
