Greening the OR- A Roadmap for Success

While the negative health effects of the climate crisis are well-documented, the role the health care system plays in driving climate change is less known among medical professionals. Healthcare creates more global emissions than aviation annually, with the operating room accounting for nearly 2/3 of these emissions. In this interactive session, we propose evidence-based solutions and go through a step-by-step roadmap for gynecologic surgeons to decarbonize their operating rooms through gaining multidisciplinary input and administrative buy-in. Greening the operating room is not only good for the environment, it also leads to significant cost savings in healthcare.

Learning Objectives: After attending this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Define the biggest impact factors in the operating room and how they create carbon emissions; 2) Implement evidence-based solutions that reduce emissions while maintaining patient safety; and 3) Develop a plan for working with administrators, organizations, and regulatory agencies to decarbonize healthcare settings.
