Dr. Artsen is an Assistant Professor and academic surgeon-scientist in the Dept of ObGynRS at the University of Pittsburgh and a Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) scholar. She completed her fellowship at UPMC after residency at UCSD and went to medical school at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Her research focuses on wound healing in vaginal reconstruction with a focus on mesh complications; sustainable and regenerative biomaterials including bio-based mesh alternatives to petroleum-based plastic meshes for stress urinary incontinence; and the carbon footprint of surgical materials and processes. Dr. Artsen is the founder and Chair of the Magee-Womens Research Institute Sustainability committee and is on the steering committee for UPMC’s Clinicians for Climate Action. She is also the co-founder of the American Urogynecology Society’s Healthcare Sustainability special interest group.
