The pathway through diagnosis and management of endometriosis has evolved and depends upon predominant symptoms and patient goals. There are various options for medical management. The role of medical therapies and how they compare with surgical management will be reviewed. Additionally, pharmacologic management options on the horizon will be mentioned.
Despite several options for pharmacologic treatment of endometriosis, some patients fail medical management, have intolerable side-effects, or simply prefer surgery. Surgical options for endometriosis management will be reviewed including indications, advantages, and disadvantages as compared with medical management.
While gynecologic etiologies such as endometriosis are commonly identified in those with chronic pelvic pain, other disorders such as bladder pain and myofascial dysfunction may be overlooked. Beyond endometriosis, the presence of concomitant chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) require a broader, more holistic approach and influence medical and surgical management choices.
Our panelists will debate the advantages and disadvantages of endometriosis and pelvic pain management options, in the context of the available evidence.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1) Indicate the evidence-based role of surgical management for endometriosis; 2) Cite the evidence-based role of medical management options for endometriosis and therapies on the horizon; and 3) Access indicators of COPCs and the roles of surgical and medical management of endometriosis in this context.
