885: Foundations of Laparoscopy in the Robotic Era

Description: This immersive course is designed to help you strengthen essential laparoscopic skills through guided, hands-on practice. You’ll perform the same exercises in both 3D and 2D environments so you can better understand how visualization affects technique, efficiency, and decision-making. Whether you are refining core laparoscopic fundamentals or looking to maintain strong non-robotic skills, this course offers practical strategies you can apply immediately in the OR. Expect small-group learning, active role rotation, expert coaching, and immediate feedback throughout the session.

A unique feature of this course is the opportunity to practice the same task in both 3D and 2D settings, helping you recognize what changes, what stays constant, and how to adapt safely and effectively. With only six learners per group, every participant stays actively engaged as operator, assistant, and observer/coach. Participants are assigned to small learning groups and rotate through paired 3D and 2D simulation stations. At each station, you’ll complete structured exercises while rotating through different roles, allowing you to practice technical skills, observe others, and learn through guided feedback.

The course is organized around three practical themes: (1) port placement, triangulation, and camera control; (2) exposure, retraction, and operative judgment; and (3) suturing and fine motor skill transfer. By practicing each theme in both 3D and 2D settings, you’ll build adaptability, improve efficiency, and strengthen safe operative decision-making.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Have greater confidence translating skills between 3D and 2D environments;
  2. have stronger control of key laparoscopic maneuvers and sharper recognition of unsafe conditions; and
  3. have a practical plan for continued skills development.
