821: PG SIG - Evaluation of Complex Pelvic Anatomy in Children and Teens - What is in Our Toolbox?

Saturday, November 14, 2026
2:15 pm - 4:15 pm

Room: RM302

Chairs: Lissa X. Yu, Kate McCracken

Faculty: Lissa X. Yu, Kate McCracken, Rachel J. Miller, Krista Childress

Description: This course will focus attention on the types of evaluation that can be used to best understand the gynecologic anatomy in pediatric and adolescent patients, reviewing what is normal in a prepubertal patient and exploring the anatomic differences that may be definable at birth versus those that cannot be definitively assessed until puberty. We will discuss awake office examination techniques, as well as examination under anesthesia and use of vaginoscopy, opportunistic chromopertubation and laparoscopy. Faculty will review risks and benefits for imaging options such as transabdominal pelvic ultrasound and MRI protocols to optimize diagnostic results. We will use case-based discussion to frame the application of these techniques to specific patient care examples. Lastly, we will discuss cutting edge innovations with technology, engineering, and multidisciplinary collaboration including 3D printing and tissue engineering to explore options for future development of diagnostic techniques in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Evaluate a pediatric and adolescent patient for a gynecologic concern in the office and determine whether an exam under anesthesia or vaginoscopy are needed;
  2. Understand and optimize use of imaging modalities in the pediatric and adolescent patient; and
  3. Identify new and emerging technologies that may help assist in diagnosis and management of pediatric and adolescent patients with complex gynecologic anatomy.
