Session Title:
SNAP-431:
 Giving Surgical Feedback to the Current Generation of Learners

Description:
This course will review several classic methods of giving feedback to trainees. These methods have been studied more in the non-surgical literature, but can be applied to procedural settings as well. One feedback strategy that is particularly helpful to apply surgical teaching to solidify long term goals is the ADAPT method (Ask, Discuss, Ask, Plan Together). This generation of learners increasingly relies on auditory and visual aids to retain information so faculty must adapt to the way they learn. Although faculty in general feel that ample feedback is given to trainees, trainees often feel that they are not given enough of it. This is reflected in ACGME surveys across the nation. This course will review the ways to not only give feedback, but ensure learners are realizing when feedback is given. Examples of how to give feedback in specific situations will be given and audience participation is encouraged.

Format:
Prerecorded

Learning Objectives:
After attending this session, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the various methods of giving surgical feedback to trainees;
  • Discuss the importance of giving feedback immediately after surgical procedures; and
  • Discuss the need for documentation and monitoring of progression of trainee skillsets with time.
