Design: video demonstration of a self-righting needle driver to load curved needles, drive needles through tissue, extract suture from the abdomen, and straighten barbed needles for safe removal from the abdomen.
Setting: high-fidelity animal tissue model
Patients or Participants: Simulation animal model for demonstrating tips and tricks of a self-righting needle driver
Interventions: none
Measurements and Main Results: none
Conclusion: While standard laparoscopic needle drivers can be used for suturing, self-righting needle drivers can be especially beneficial, as they not only automatically “right” the needle in the correct position, but they also resist twisting of the needle as it passes through tissue. The self-righting needle driver is a reliable instrument that facilitates laparoscopic suturing by correctly orienting curved needles and resisting twisting of the needle when taking tissue purchases, even with extremely dense tissues.
