Surgical Coaching and Feedback: Creating a Supportive Surgical Learning Environment

This course reviews techniques for creating a safe learning environment in the operating room for learners and attendings. Contrary to previous practice where the Socratic method and "pimping" were used to drill lessons into learners, a large amount of evidence now links the sensation of being "safe" and "comfortable" in the operating room with improved learning and retention. The session will focus on ways to optimize procedural teaching and learning employing an inclusive approach to teaching in the operating and procedure room. We will also discuss approaches to feedback that lead the learner to be more receptive to feedback, particularly the use of specific language and words.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Provide guidance on how to coach surgical learners in the operating room and with conscious patients; 2) Discuss optimal methods for providing learner feedback; and
3) Review ways in which to engage faculty and learners in identifying and addressing surgical learning gaps.
