Climate Change Begins at 7:15 - Kelly N. Wright
In 2009, the Lancet called climate change the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Though it does not receive the scrutiny of other industries, the global healthcare industry accounts for almost double the amount of carbon emissions as global aviation, and the United States accounts for 27% of this footprint despite only having 4% of the world's population. It therefore serves that our own industry is an excellent target for reducing the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. It is important to bring this issue to light to other surgeons, as we all see the immense carbon footprint our cases are responsible for every day, but we may not know the impact or how to change it. This MED talk will review the problem of healthcare emissions, the impacts on patients, and the power to change our ways in the operating room.
